Men in general are less concerned about skincare than women. But in recent times there has been an increase of awareness among men regarding skincare routines. One of the skin problems that many men face is of dry skin.
Dry skin tends to be common during cold winters or dry climates. Frequent hot showers and excessive sun exposure can further worsen dry skin. Hence, a proper skincare routine that focus on moisturizing and staying hydrated is required for men with dry skin.
But before we move on to establishing a proper skincare routine for dry skin, let us look at the causes behind dry skin.
What causes dry skin in men?
Dry skin occurs due to a combination of factors. These are environmental factors, lifestyle choices and genetics. Dry and cold weather, excessive sun exposure and wind can strip the skin of its natural moisture. Men with oily skin can also end up developing dry skin during harsh winters. Therefore, weather is a leading cause of dry skin.
Men with improper skincare routines, like using less moisturizers or using products with alcohol are prone to dry skin. Excessive alcohol consumption can dehydrate the skin. Also, frequent hot showers can contribute to dry skin in men.
Genetics also plays a role in determining skin type. If your parents have a dry skin type, then you are more likely to have dry skin. It becomes important to keep your skin hydrated in such situations.
Signs that you have dry skin
Dry skin is characterised by flakiness. It feels tight and itchy. Dry skin is prone to redness. Dry skin often has a rough texture. These signs of dry skin tend to worsen during winters. As men age fine lines and wrinkles will be more prominent. Dry skin is more sensitive to harsh skincare products.

Now that we know the causes and signs of dry skin, it is time to establish a proper skincare routine.
Any skincare routine begins with cleansing. Look for a gentle, hydrating and sulfate-free cleanser. The cleanser must be creamy or oil-based. Avoid cleansers with fragrances or alcohol content. Wash your face with lukewarm water and apply the cleanser using your fingers.
Use gentle circular motions to apply the cleanser. This will promote blood circulation. Rinse your face with lukewarm water and gently dry it. Cleanse your face twice a day. This will remove all dirt and impurities form your skin.
The second step is exfoliation. Opt for an exfoliator that is designed for dry skin. Look for ingredients like lactic acid or glycolic acid. Exfoliate only once a week. If you find it to be too drying, then exfoliate once in every two weeks.
Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells from your skin and cleanses your skin more deeply.
Moisturizing is the most important step in a dry skincare routine. Dry skin lacks moisture and is dehydrated. Skin when hydrated becomes soft and supple. Hence, you must moisturize your skin twice after cleansing or exfoliation.
Look for ingredients like shea butter, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides. Opt for fragrance free moisturizers. Use a richer and thicker moisturizer at night-time. Use lighter and non-greasy during daytime.
While cleansing and exfoliation open skin pores, moisturizers contain nutrients that penetrate deeper in the skin. Therefore, moisturizing is important after the first two steps.
Using sun protection is another important step of any skincare routine. It protects your skin from signs of premature aging and hyperpigmentation. Extremely hot environments can worsen dry skin.
Hence, it is important to use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF above 30. Use it when you move out in the sun. Reapply it after every two hours of staying out. Avoid going out during the afternoon as the sun’s rays are most intense at this time of the day.
Finally, you can use a hydrating facial mask once or twice a week to add additional moisture to your skin. Use a hydrating mist throughout the day.
The above is a good skincare routine for dry skin. Some men may need to alter it according to the needs of their skin.
Lifestyle adjustments for dry skin
Drink lots of water. When there is inadequate water in the body, it tends to pull water from the skin, worsening dry skin. Therefore, stay hydrated. Don’t binge drink as alcohol dehydrates the body. Also, if possible use a humidifier in your house.
Avoid using hot water while having a bath or cleansing your face. Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils.
In conclusion
Dry skin is a result of environmental factors, genetics and wrong skincare practices. It can result in tight and flaky skin, which is prone to redness. Dry skin makes the skin texture rough and worsens signs of skin aging like wrinkles.
Men need to use a proper skincare routine that concentrates on increasing the moisture levels in the skin. Finally, a few lifestyle changes are also needed.
